AVIDYA

Short Film - Directed by Amit kayshap, Cinematographer by Yashasvi Chadha

About Film :

Avidya is a short film that revolves around the emotional journey of a young boy who is sent away from home to study at a traditional boarding Gurukul in Kurukshetra, Haryana. The Gurukul follows strict Vedic teachings and discipline, where the child is compelled to adapt to a completely different lifestyle centered around ancient education and values.

The boy, however, struggles deeply with this sudden change. He shares a strong emotional bond with his mother and finds it extremely difficult to live without her. The unfamiliar environment, rigid rules, and lack of familial comfort make him feel isolated and distressed. Unable to cope with the separation, he even attempts to run away from the Gurukul in hopes of returning home.

The decision to send him away was not merely about education. His parents, particularly his father, had personal motives behind it. His father was involved in an extramarital affair and intended to separate from his wife. To prevent the child from growing up in a broken and morally complicated household—or perhaps to avoid the child becoming like them—the parents chose to send him away to the Gurukul.

As the story unfolds, the boy gradually uncovers the truth about his father’s actions and the reality of his family situation. This revelation deeply affects him, forcing him to confront emotions of betrayal, confusion, and maturity beyond his years. In a turning point, instead of running away again, the child makes a conscious decision to remain in the Gurukul.

His choice symbolizes a shift in his understanding and acceptance of reality. Despite the pain of separation and the harshness of his circumstances, he begins to see the Gurukul not just as a place of exile, but as a refuge and a path toward shaping his own identity—different from the flawed world he left behind.
